In 2011, we celebrated the opening of the Thwake Health Clinic, which was built by the hands of Thwake villagers with funds raised by the Thwake Task Force and donations from the Heartland Presbytery.
The Thwake Task Force of the Heartland Presbytery continues to raise funds to staff the clinic with a resident nurse who works five days a week and remains on call at all hours of the night. They also use donated funds to purchase medicine for the clinic. In January 2015, the Kenyan Government agreed to supply all medicine for the Thwake Village Health Clinic, and our hope is that they will soon employ the nurse as well.
Each year a mission group from the Kansas City area heads to Thwake and hosts a free health fair. In 2013 the health fair expanded to include a dentist and a dermatologist. Additionally, the Merriam/Shawnee Lion’s Club partnered with another Lion’s Club based in Makueni, Kenya to offer eye exams as well as provide glasses if needed.
